I've put some simple instructions for children to make their own knitting needles here http://prezi.com/baqgexisslt-/how-to-make-your-own-knitting-needles/ You should be able to get a small group to create one pair each in about 1 hour (excluding the time for baking the fimo and sticking the stoppers on).

I have looked at this how-to 'video', and it's fantastic!
