New Term New Project!

Claire Hoey 12/01/11

We had our first Craft Club of the term yesterday at Bamford Primary School. This term we are doing wet felting. We started with just eight children between the four adults that came because we were learning as well. Carol Wilson is teaching us all how to do it. We had used some of the £100 sponsorship money that we raised to buy the wool roving that we needed for the project and then Carol has very kindly donated her time and her tools for free. Before Craft Club had even started the children were all wanting to touch the wool and see how it felt. As they passed through the classroom on their way to register they were all taken by the wonderfully bright colours and were deperate to get stuck in. This first half term all the junior children are learning the technique of wet felting and making two pieces of coloured felt with abstract designs on. they will then cut these pieces up and make triangle shapes which will be threaded onto a felt rope that they will also make to create wonderfully colourful bunting for their bedrooms. Then in the second half term we are choosing a local landscape and will be making a HUGE wallhanging in felt of the landscape, each child creating a square of it. It is a very exciting project. I have to say the boys particularly liked the way the soapy foam was flying everywhere - the classroom has never looked so clean! As well as this we started a knitting club in the lunch hour. When the children had learnt that were doing something other than knitting in craft club there was uproar as they wanted to continue their knitting - so I have now started a knitting club in the lunch hour in which we are making either a small dog, cat or owl - which will be made from knitted rectangles sewn together and then the features will be made from felt. So all in all a very exciting start to the Craft Club term! There will be photos in the album soon. Claire
