Un-knitting knitter stereotypes

tanglebangle 23/03/10

Hi all,

Was wondering how many of you already working with young people have come up against stereotyping/ resistance/ preconceived ideas that block their willingness to get involved in crafting - and perhaps particularly 'soft' or traditionally feminine yarn crafts? Decribe your experiences (and good come-backs) here!

Thanks,

Miriam

p.s. there are some rather amusing pictures relating to this in Lindsay Chalford-Brown's 'Recycled Rainforest' powerpoint in the File Transfer area

I used to teach woodwork (D&T) and experienced this in reverse. You could try the idea of changing floppy yarn into a solid, useful shape like a bag. Knitting monster masks like hats, or knit a brick so a group could build a house, or knit a car(one side at a time). Anything wierd usually gets them going.
